General dentistry describes all of the dental services that a general dental practitioner would typically provide in their practice. This includes:
- Treatment of dental emergencies
- Check-ups and professional cleaning
- Preventive dentistry
- Children’s dentistry
- Fillings
- Dental crowns and bridges
- Root canal therapy
- Extractions
- Management of wisdom teeth
- Management of missing teeth
- Dental implants
- Dentures
- Cosmetic dentistry
General Dentistry vs Cosmetic Dentistry
Sometimes, practices will distinguish between “General Dentistry” and “Cosmetic Dentistry.” In our practice, we find that many of the day-to-day procedures we do, like fillings and crowns, have a very strong cosmetic component. That’s because we use a lot of tooth-coloured materials like porcelain and composite resin. Dr Teo takes pride in ensuring that new fillings and crowns are colour-matched to blend in with nearby teeth.
Dental Specialists
After graduating with their Dental Degree, some dentists do additional training (usually a Master’s Degree) in a specialist field. Upon graduation, they may then limit their practice to this area of expertise. In Australia, specialists include
- Orthodontics
- Endodontics
- Periodontics
- Prosthodontics
- Oral-Maxillo-Facial Surgery
- Paediatric Dentistry
Referrals to Dental Specialists
Most dental treatments are provided within our practice by Dr Ailin Teo.
On occasion, Dr Teo will refer patients to dental specialists if their treatment is complex or requires specialist assistance.
A referral will only be made following a comprehensive examination of and discussion with the patient and if Dr Teo believes a referral is in the patient’s best interest.
